A Review of this product

Logitech officially unveiled their new G27 Racing Controller, an evolved version of the outstanding G25 released in 2006. Back then, the G25 was Logitech’s greatest gift to the racing simulation community, providing solid build quality, an array of new features and durable metal components wrapped in an appealing, steel-and-leather aesthetic that made it the class of the field.

As good as it was, the G25 wasn’t perfect. Reviewers and consumers noted several areas that were ripe for improvement. And Logitech’s engineers listened. In time, plans were set in motion to produce a refined version of the G25, one that addressed the critical comments of the sim racing community. The G27 is replacing the G25 in Logitech’s racing controller lineup; with the G27 hitting store shelves in October.

The new G27 racing wheel features a dual motor, single reduction force feedback transmission which is supported by 2 sets of ball bearings, and which has diagonally cut Helical Gears. Doing away with the old spur gears which was one of the G25’s drawbacks, gives the new G27 Wheel a much smoother and quieter operating platform.

The leather wheel is slightly thicker than the G25 and is 285mm in diameter, features 6 programmable buttons, and 2 stainless steel shift paddles. There are also ten LED’s on the wheel  which can be set to act as an rpm or shift indicator in racing games.

The gear shift has been redesigned internally to give a greater centering force and a more positive feel when engaging gears. Extensive internal modifications from the G25's shifter has certainly improved its feel and operation. The shifter however, is now a stand alone H pattern, the sequential setting has been eliminated, which will cause some angst in the wider racing community.

The Pedals remain largely unchanged. The pedal arms have four additional holes to enable custom positioning of the pedal’s stainless steel pads. To allow for more consistent heel and toe operation the pedals geometry has changed from the G25 and are also spaced differently (see image below).

Release date in Australia is approximately October 2009.
